As can be seen from this population map, the 7.8 earthquake that hit China today 12 May 2008 close to Chengdu in Sichuan Province is situated in the middle of a highly populated area. In addition to the major earthquake measuring 7,8 on Richter's scale, several afterquakes are registered as well. Beijing also experienced an earthquake.
