Hugo's work shows that it is possible to make beautiful maps in modern digital times. I think Google Maps should take lessons at Nordpil, that is what I think. :-)

"The Arctic represents one of the least populated areas in the world, with only sparse settlements and very few large cities and towns - in comparison with e.g. continental Europe. The largest cities are in Northwest Russia, and Reykjavik is the only national capital in the Arctic. The extraction of natural resources has emerge as a main interest and priority in the Arctic region, and this may cause increases and shifts in population."


The Arctic is vulnerable to begin with. Oil and other natural recources are abundant in this area and we need to improve our Earth observation skills and infrastructure and security measures. At least....

This is a map showing population prognosis for Europe 2004 - 2030. Even if you don't understand German you can tell the major trends when you know that blue means lesser people and red means growth. The number indicate % in either direction.

Looks like south of Norway is about to get invaded! Note that you are looking for the same destiny in Irland too, Hapax! :-)

Population Density - China



As can be seen from this population map, the 7.8 earthquake that hit China today 12 May 2008 close to Chengdu in Sichuan Province is situated in the middle of a highly populated area. In addition to the major earthquake measuring 7,8 on Richter's scale, several afterquakes are registered as well. Beijing also experienced an earthquake.
